Photos Of Neighbors Who Make The Neighborhood More Exciting

Ah, the suburbs — simultaneously the most relaxing and chaotic place to live. With all those neighbors stacked next to and on top of one another, there's bound to be some bickering from time to time. But these neighborhoods are truly chaotic, utilizing catty notes, outlandish decor, and even building houses solely out of spite. Yup, some homeowners make it known that they're fed up with their neighbor's nonsense in hilariously blunt and creative ways.

1. There ya go, Bob!

Well, after all the pestering from Bob, his neighbor finally caved and painted the fence. They were also generous enough to make sure Bob noticed the fence every single time he drove by. How nice! After all, Bob deserves to see his kind suggestion come to fruition.

2. Misplaced love note

Who knew that leaving a nice note for your wife could cause so much drama? After this unfortunate person accidentally left their sweet nothings on someone else’s car, they were forced to apologize to the whole neighborhood in the form of a sign. And we love how its author has signed off with an apology, just in case hopes were raised by the misplaced missive.

3. No trees allowed

This takes "petty" to unbelievable new levels. We can understand not wanting a tree to hang over your driveway — it's a recipe for bird droppings, or worse, a fallen branch crashing through your windshield — but clearly, the tree's owner didn't agree. Instead of chopping down the tree and planting a new one somewhere else, he simply took a chainsaw to half the tree. Like we said: petty.

4. Stay vigilant...

If there's one thing you never want careening at you through the air, it's feces. If this pet owner dares to leave their dog's droppings behind again, they better have a toothbrush and some Crest ready immediately, because this angry neighbor sounds like they mean business... and like they have some experience flinging feces at passersby.

5. Yoda yard sale

Fans of Star Wars out there will already be well aware of Yoda’s wisdom and intellect. So why wouldn’t people take the Jedi master’s advice and visit the yard sale being advertised in this amazing poster? A faithful representation of the fictional sage's speech patterns, it is.

6. From debt to bet

Before this house was built, this tiny plot of land was scoffed at by the other neighbors. Only one man, Newton Rummonds, believed in the 10-foot-wide plot, and, wagering his $100 debt, he bet that he could build a proper home. When this postage-stamp-sized home was revealed, the man not only had a unique place to live but was debt free!

7. They're clearly jealous!

There's nothing like a healthy dose of sarcastic praise to get a point across. Yes, these people are super "jealous" of those speakers. If someone is dense enough to keep their music playing at eardrum-shattering volumes in the middle of the night, then they'd probably take this note as a compliment.

8. Keeping things vague

Sometimes, the most effective advertising doesn’t say much at all. But this sign might be taking the concept of "vague" to a whole other level. And frustratingly, the poster also fails to provide any contact details whatsoever, so it’s unclear how to reach out. The fewer details we have, the more we want to know...

9. Good or bad aim?

Clearly, someone has terrible aim... or maybe they have great aim and totally meant for their arrow to puncture this turbine. According to the original Imgur poster, this turbine is "obnoxiously loud" — that is, it was obnoxiously loud until this well-placed arrow broke the turbine. At least the neighborhood got some much-needed silence after that.

10. Wi-Fi weirdo

This is why everyone should lock their Wi-Fi networks once their routers are installed. Why should you pay for the internet when guys like Nick are too cheap to get their own? We know Nick is charming — he even left an "xo" for his neighbors! — but it's time for him to grow up and get his own router... or at least steal from someone else.

11. Family matter

You'd think with a name like the "cake house," there'd be a more wholesome story. The real, and terribly sad, story is that it was made in protest against state authorities, who took the home owner's foster grandchild in the 1960s. Why the “cake house” is still standing, we haven't the slightest idea. But it's definitely a thought-provoking addition to the neighborhood.

12. Much-needed toilet paper

Well played, sir. You can imagine the package thief saw a big box and thought they were about to find a bunch of interesting items. But they should've known that these days, toilet paper is as much of a commodity as a designer purse or an expensive gaming console. Now they've got rolls of Charmin for days. For revenge's sake, let's hope they need it.

13. Silly walks sign

This notice will confound anyone who isn’t a fan of a certain British TV comedy show from the 1960s and ’70s. One of Monty Python's Flying Circus’ more memorable sketches presented us with a government department concerned solely with the funding and development of silly walks. This notice picks up the concept and runs with it while adding the threat of rather surreal enforcement action.

14. Watch your back...

Does anyone else hear that spine-tingling keyboard music, or is it just us?! Grab a carving knife and some knitting needles, because you just may have to go all Laurie Strode on this masked menace. All jokes aside, this Michael Meyers costume is a little too convincing for our liking. Neighborhood babysitters... watch your back.

15. Passive-aggression totally permitted

The user on Reddit who shared this photo said that their father’s neighbor always butts in to ask for a permit regarding yard work they are doing. So, the poster came up with the perfect way of saying yes to that question. Are you happy now, Larry?

16. Season’s greetings

When the festive season rolls around, we’re inundated with the same old season’s greetings we’ve become used to – year in, year out. So when someone tries to spread holiday cheer in a novel way like this, it can really make us smile. With that in mind, adding Yule tidings to a "For lease" sign is an easy and genius way to mark Christmas, although the real estate company might not agree.

17. Sold in China

Some spite houses are on another level. This lone home in China stood strong against developers' plans to build a parking lot, contributing to a steadily growing trend of homeowners going to crazy lengths to stay put.

18. Frosty relations

The Redditor who shared this note said that it appeared on their sister and brother-in-law’s front door when they came home one day. Apparently, the neighbors didn’t like what they could see. We think the most horrifying part of this note is the implication that not just one neighbor, but many saw them in the nude.

19. Mama always said...

As the famous Forrest Gump quote says, “Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” And it seems that the same wisdom from the movie can be applied to yard sales, as this clever poster shows. The line is so iconic that it’s hard not to read it in Gump’s recognizable southern drawl.

20. Snowy steps

What is it about neighbors that makes people resort to such sad levels of pettiness? It probably wouldn't have been a big deal for the shoveler to clean off all the steps. There's clearly something going on between these neighbors if one of them is willing to risk injuring the other!

21. Heavy-footed foes

What is it about upstairs neighbors that makes them sound like a herd of elephants all the time? Anyone who has lived in an apartment building understands what warranted this angry note. The person who created this note is either sending a warning message to the stompers or highlighting their upstairs neighbor’s love of cinder-block sandals.

22. Neighborly complaint

It’s not clear if this army of plastic flamingos was the cause of this neighborly dispute or a reaction to it. Whatever the case, the accompanying sign revealed some major beef brewing as a result of an alleged phone call to the police. Let’s hope the person in question took heed, ’cause these birds don’t look like they’re messing around.

23. Rebel with a house

Seattle resident Edith Macefield truly knew how to stick it to the man, refusing to sell her small home despite pressure from developers and an entire city popping up around her. As the neighbors sold out to big industry developers, Edith said, "I'm staying home." Today, the little home is still going strong, surrounded by the big city. Now, that's a level of petty we can get on board with.

24. The easy way, or the fun way?

You could call the police on a devious neighbor... but that's just a little too easy, don't you think? Instead, consider doing what this guy did: hang a massive message on your balcony to help your neighbor correct their bad behavior. If he doesn't listen, then you can call the cops — you warned him!

25. Rating the revelers

As the old saying goes, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.” One note writer kind of took this to heart by issuing a full-length review of their neighbor’s late-night karaoke party that lasted until a horrifying 9:00 a.m. Karaoke is fun for a little while, but not all night long! These late-night singers deserve every snarky comment coming to them.

26. Wi-Fi wars

Sometimes, passive-aggressive notes take more than just a physical form. In this example, warring neighbors rely on their Wi-Fi network names to bash one another for their musical tastes and grammatical skills, respectively. That's got to make for an awkward elevator ride...

27. A message to the pumpkin thief

It’s an unwritten rule that you don’t mess with parents when it comes to their children. So it’s pretty unsurprising that this mom or dad was left furious after someone stole their son’s pumpkin. The sign lures the reader in with its polite and indeed surprising response to the loss, but there's a wonderful sting in the tale.

28. “You suck”

As this droll sign attests, stealing plants is not okay. It correctly characterizes such behavior as a “low and selfish act.” We love the way it goes on to equate the theft with violence towards baby felines; it's clearly the logical next step. And we're sure the perpetrator appreciates the holistic appraisal of his or her life choices.

29. Neighborhood pride

Here's an especially beautiful way to show your support for the LGBTQ+ community. The house is far enough from the street that we doubt any multicolored lights were blinding the neighbors. Honestly, we'd be delighted by this home's decor. Five stars!

30. She must be special

And, we're back to petty neighbors being petty. But we have to admit, we'd be peeved by this parking placement, too. Who does this driver think they are? Whoever wielded the pink chalk can clearly answer that question: a princess, one who is too lazy to find a proper parking spot.

31. Something’s bed-bugging me

There are plenty of fair reasons to break ties with your roommate — bedbugs being one of them. In fact, if we had to choose between Voldemort as a roommate or a roommate with rampant bedbugs, we'd probably choose the evil wizard. We might suggest having the “you’re moving out” discussion face-to-face, though — you don't want her to leave any of those little mites behind.

32. Wear thick socks

The audacity! The gall! The nerve of these neighbors to screw a light fixture into their ceiling without realizing the painful repercussions it may have on their upstairs neighbor! All this said, though, perhaps these screws are the downstairs neighbor's way of getting their upstairs neighbor to be careful where they stomp...

33. One-man dog band

Someone with a lot of time on their hands — and many hours spent listening to a dog bark — created this burn of a poster advertising a local concert. Apparently, the show could last anywhere from 2 to 12 hours, which is a great bargain for ticket-holders who stay all night.

34. Sibling squabble

One of the first known spite houses ever built in the U.S. was built in 1716, for two brothers who couldn't stand to be around each other. The tiny home was not only a refuge from the other brother, but it also served to block the view of the harbor, which was dear to the brother's heart. Petty neighbors existed all the way back in the 1700s, it turns out.

35. A gruesome group

It may not be in your best interest to try to convince these movie monsters of anything. You never know what might happen if they disagree with you! Yes, this assemblage of murderers may be fake, but we can imagine why people cross the street whenever they walk by. They're an intimidating group!

36. Exorcising a right to silence

This message seems to make a pretty reasonable request, as people have to sleep and work during the week. The exorcism of demons, therefore, should only take place on the weekends. It's only fair, as most people make a conscious effort to keep their demon's noise levels down for the sake of their neighbor's comfort.

37. A bunch of nuts

An Imgur user took this pic of their neighbor's recycling bin, and we honestly can't blame them. We love a hazelnut-chocolate spread as much as the next person, but 20+ containers?! What were they doing, making the world's largest piece of toast? That's the only explanation for why someone would hoard so much Nutella.

38. Honesty is the best policy

Given that yard sales often consist of things that other people no longer want, you sometimes have to be a bit of a magpie to find the treasure hidden within the trash. This sign seems to acknowledge this fact in a brutally honest way, and we salute its wonderfully candid approach.

39. Home blocker

Steal a man's property and he'll make you pay, legally of course. After the city of Alameda, California, took a large portion of his open land to make a street in the late 1900s, Charles Froling built this home to both irritate the city and block the view of one neighbor who supported the construction. Nothing like neighbors becoming close!

40. Trash talk

Taking out the trash isn’t the most fun household chore, but throwing things down a garbage chute is a blast. So, hopefully, this passive-aggressive note helped the recipient realize how good they had it.

41. Barking mad

There’s always that one neighborhood dog that almost drives you to do this. Hats off to the person who finally delivered the passive-aggressive note we all dream of sending.

42. Grab a shovel

Street parking is already a headache before you add a blizzard to the equation. "My neighbor is efficient," this Imgur user wrote, and we totally see what he means. Instead of digging out his entire truck, he simply shoveled a path to his driver's side door. How he eventually got out of this situation is anyone's guess.

43. Armed turtle on the loose

Usually, a missing pet doesn't provoke fears over public safety in the local community, but it seems as though this turtle may be of the Teenage Mutant Ninja variety. This humorous sign jokes that the snapper might be on the loose with a pair of nunchucks. With that in mind, it warns that the animal is “slow but very dangerous.”

44. It wasn’t me

The golden rule of passive-aggressive note-writing is to make sure you send your message to the right person. Otherwise, an even snarkier response may follow.

45. Ye of little plot

Francis O'Reilly is another eccentric guy who fought back against his enemy with an annoyingly-placed house. When his neighbors refused to shell out the cash to buy the narrow strip of land at the end of the block, O'Reilly taught him a lesson — by purchasing the land and constructing a spite house. The eight-foot-wide home still stands today.

46. Real estate reassurance

In the fickle world of real estate, it doesn’t take much for a deal to fall through. So it seems that this agent has taken it upon himself to eliminate one worry from potential buyers’ minds by officially declaring this house as ghoul-free right up front on the sign. At least the new owner will be able to sleep soundly.

47. Vote for Thor

Now, we’re not entirely clear why this dog is named after the Norse god of thunder. Or why he has a surname. Or, indeed, in precisely which election he’s hoping to triumph. But there’s no denying that he has some campaign causes we can really get behind! It’s reassuring to know this trusty canine has our back should our household appliances turn on us. And that parts of unwanted visitors to the door can be wolfed down on demand.

48. "Ditto"

Christmas can be an overwhelming time for people, what with all the gift-buying, baking, carol-singing, and of course, decorating. Thankfully for this guy, his neighbor gladly took the reins on the Christmas decorating. All he had to do was sit back, relax, and point people towards the star of the show...as if they couldn't see it from a mile away.

49. Park at your own peril

As far as parking notices go, this one’s surely up there with the best. It warns rampant parkers of a number of unpleasant circumstances that could arise from putting their car in the wrong place. And the sign's author clearly has a talent for tapping into the deepest fears in our collective psyche: we can withstand anything except insane rodents and social exclusion.

50. Silly spite house

In the 19th century, a squabble between two brothers (yes, another Massachusetts-based feud between brothers) resulted in a rather skinny attraction. Upon returning from military service, one brother discovered the other had constructed a large house on land they'd both inherited. So, doing what any vindictive brother would do, he built a 10.4-foot-wide structure on the remaining property, creating one of the silliest tourist spots the city has to offer.

51. Michael Scott’s yard sale

Fans of The Office may recall Michael Scott’s ill-fated fun run to raise awareness of rabies. The hilarious event is alluded to in this poster, which advertises the “Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrities Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Yard Sale For The Cure.” Now try saying that without taking a breath.

52. Smoking cat

You can’t blame this resident for asking folk not to drop their cigarette butts near their house. After all, they are unsightly and slightly gross. This householder, however, clearly understood that displaying a sense of humor about the issue was more likely to be effective than taking a more straightforward approach. And dreaming up a (presumably fictionalized) feline nicotine habit certainly sparked online interest, and doubtless caught the attention of its target audience too.

53. Towering spite

An iconic landmark in the small town, Adamsville, Rhode Island, still stands today, in spite of its awkward position. No one knows for sure the true reason for its construction, but ironically enough, the reason might not have been out of spite at all, but instead to acquire water from a terribly placed water well.

54. Thanos and Gamora

Marvel enthusiasts will no doubt be familiar with the scene depicted on this genius poster. The images depict the emotional final scene from Avengers: Infinity War between Thanos and Gamora. But rather than discussing the fate of the universe, their dialog is applied to a yard sale – with a clever twist.

55. “Comb-over”

This brilliant sign pokes fun at Donald Trump’s unique hairstyle. Featuring a caricature of the U.S. President’s face, it urges folk to visit the sale in a verbally imaginative way. The notice brought a smile to at least one person, who wrote on Reddit, “[My] wife and I were visiting family and drove [past] this. Had a good laugh at it!”

56. Mysterious narrow house

Sometimes the backstory behind a spite house isn't completely known, or there are multiple sides to the story. Take this tiny shotgun house that looks too narrow for anyone to occupy. Some say it's the work of an angry divorcée; others say it came from quarreling neighbors. Either way, it recently sold for just shy of half a million dollars!

57. Biological warfare

In 2013 Reddit user SrgntPeppers posted this amazing notice on Reddit explaining, “Our elderly neighbors have this sign posted on the bike path in their backyard.” We love the concept of these tech-savvy senior citizens enlisting the (presumably willing) participation of their grandchild in their imaginative tit-for-tat reprisal plan.

58. Failed heir

This colonial home was built in 1806 with revenge in mind after the young heir was removed from his father's will by his step-mother. Designed to be grander than the home she took over, the Phippsburg, Maine, spite house eventually fell into the stepmother's possession as well after the spiteful son failed to make any heirs of his own.

59. The ultimate revenge

This sign hints at a lot of bad blood going on behind the scenes. Is selling off possessions a rational or proportionate response to alleged marital infidelity? There were some mixed feelings on Reddit, where it was slammed as “trashy.” However, one user countered, “Seems like a perfectly good reason to have a yard sale.”

60. Dealing with in-laws

It's a classic story. Wealthy girl meets aristocrat boy, wealthy girl marries boy, and then she plots revenge against her unsupportive in-laws. That’s what happened in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when Corina Kavanagh requested the construction of a building solely to block her hateful in-law's view of their favorite church.
